In Combing Through, you'll use one tool, a comb, to create a rich variety of designs and patterns. That being said, there are many different types of combs, and you'll have a chance to work with several of them.

In Layer Layer, you'll use many types of tools and combine layers of paint to create intricate and complex patterns and designs.

In each workshop, after you've made several papers and they've had a chance to dry thoroughly, you'll use some of them to make your choice of projects as time permits...an accordion sample book, a mini portfolio, or a gift bag. You'll take home a day's worth of paste papers you can then use to make those projects and more...covers for handmade books, gift wrap, wall art, note cards, gift tags, laminated placemats and coasters...endless possibilities!

Please bring a sack lunch...there's a fully equipped kitchen on site if you need to refrigerate or heat something up. There is also a Trader Joe's and a Ralphs supermarket in walking distance.

A selection of Marie's gorgeous paste papers will be available for purchase at the workshops at a 25% discount.

With her paste paper patterns, Marie Kelzer creates artist books, binds blank books, and makes paper products from calendars to coasters to covered pencils. Her paste paper designs, handbound books, and expressive artists' books are exhibited and collected worldwide by private collectors as well as art and academic institutions.

In her own words:

"Our past creates our future. Growing up on a family dairy farm in Minnesota gave me many introspective days for thinking and observing. Studying bookbinding and working in commercial binderies gave me the skills and diligence to create an end product. I practice the art of painting paste papers which I discovered as a bookbinder. I like to experiment with paper, canvas, and collage. I am intrigued by colors and tones as patterns in architecture and nature."

Marie grew up in Minnesota, lived in North Carolina, Oakland, Berkeley, and San Francisco and now resides in Marina Del Rey, California, near the ocean breezes and positive ions. Visit Marie's website at mariekelzerdesigns.com to learn more about her work.
